Croatia’s impressive islands and coastline are visited by many tourists each year, but just 20km inland lies the lesser known, untouched landscapes, just begging to be explored by bicycle. This fantastic individual bike and hotel tour was specifically designed for the nature lovers, with national parks and a thriving wildlife welcoming you into the wild and mountainous interior.

Entering the deep forests and stone deserts inland, your tour takes you through a region dominated by the Bora wind – where snow collects metres deep during the rough and unforgiving winters. You’ll cycle through the mid-range and high mountain regions of the Croatian hinterland, via three national parks, where bears, wolves and lynx can still be encountered in the wild! With mountain top panoramic views of the Croatian Islands, this cycling holiday is one truly immersed in Croatia’s natural scenic beauty.

The beauty of this tour lies in the opportunity to stop at will and cycle at your own pace. Your luggage is transported between hotels for you, and a GPS device means there’s no need to worry about making any wrong turns. Bliss!

Day 8: Departure From Karlovac

Day 1: Arrival in Fužine

Individual arrival in Fužine. On request, we will gladly organise fee-based transfer from Rijeka train station or Rijeka or Zagreb airport to your first hotel. You have the rest of the day for a short introductory cycle along the three lakes, located in the immediate vicinity of the village, or in the surrounding area. Time permitting; there are several possibilities to cycle further. A detour to the 300m deep Vrelo Cave, which is only a few km away from Fužine, comes highly recommended.

Day 2: Risnjak National Park: 54km (+1,000m) cycle

After breakfast begins the first official stage of your cycle tour. Today’s destination is Risnjak National Park. Ris is the Croatian word for lynx, so Risnjak roughly translates as ‘’Place of the Lynx’’. You reach the entrance to the park after about 25km, where you can explore either by bike or foot at leisure. There is a special trail for nature enthusiasts, where you can learn everything about the local fauna and flora. The park itself is home to many protected plant and animal species. In the afternoon you return to your hotel.

Day 3: Fužine – Otocac: 88km (+1,170m) cycle

After breakfast, the first part of today’s stage takes you alongside large fields and into a dense forest. After not too long, in the middle of the deepest woords, you come across a small, cosy restaurant named Vagabundo. The friendly owners are experts at creating delicious snacks from the ingredients available at their doorstep. Even though it is a bit early for lunch, don’t miss the opportunity to sample some of their delectable delicacies. After a few more km you reach the sloping hills towards the Adriatic, which have been partially swept bare by the Bora. Here you have incredible views across the islands of Kvarn Bay. The final destination on this leg is the small village of Otocac at the Gacka River, well known for its abundance of trout.

Day 4: Otocac – Plitvice Lakes National Park: 48km (+600m) cycle

Leaving Otocac you continue your journey to the Plitvice Lakes National Park. Passing through some quaint and peaceful villages, you ride through hilly terrain as far as the forest belt of the Plitvice Lakes. On today’s stage, you have the opportunity to take a much deserved dip in the refreshing lake. After arrival at around noon, you move into your hotel located directly in the Park. Afterwards, there’s much time to explore the park on foot. Enjoy the fascinating variety of plants and admire the waterfalls cascading from one basin to the next.

Day 5: Plitvice Lakes National Park – Slunj: 49km (+560m) cycle

The Plitvice Lakes are Croatia’s largest national park, and the oldest in Southeastern Europe (a UNESCO World Heritage Sit since 1979). In the morning, you have time explore another part of the park, on especially constructed boardwalks, deeper and deeper into the otherwise untouched nature. After a hearty lunch, you jump back on your bikes and today’s stage takes you along the Bosnian border. Arriving in Slunj, its neighbourhood of Rastoke is known for being a mini version of the Plitvice Lakes. Here, the Slunjcica River branches out into many small creeks and flows through the numerous cascades and small waterfalls into the Korona.

Day 6: Slunj – Karlovac: 68km (+640m) Cycle

After breakfast, you cycle from Slunj to Karlovac – one of the youngest cities in Croatia. Founded in 1579 at the confluence of the four rivers, the fortress is considered an outstanding example of Renaissance architecture. The historical Baroque centre was heavily damaged in the war but has largely been restored over the past few years and so is worth visiting. Take some time in the evening to stroll around the city and taste a glass of the local Karlovacko beer.

Day 7: Karlovac: 25-75km

Today is all about you. You can choose your activities from a rich and varied program. Because of its location at four rivers, the region around Karlovac offers various cycling tours of various lengths and difficulties. As an alternative, you have the possibility to book (through your local hotel) a rafting tour, fishing course, horseback excursion or hike.

Day 8: Departure From Karlovac

After breakfast, your tour comes to an end. However, it is possible to extend your stay or be transferred (free of charge) to Fužine at your request.
