What’s better than a family cycling holiday exploring the many virtues a foreign country has to offer? Well, how about one that explores three countries in just six days, circumnavigating central Europe’s third largest lake? A cycling tour around the revitalising fresh waters of Lake Constance is the perfect trip for those looking to fit in as much culture as possible, whilst taking in some of the finest examples of natural beauty the region has to offer.

This cycling holiday takes you to and through some of the region’s well-known historical hot spots. A visit to St Gallen highlights just how much culture this tour has to offer, with a whopping 28 local sites listed as Swiss heritage sites of national significance. Best known is the St Gallen Abbey, a UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE in its own right whose interior is one of the most important baroque monuments in Switzerland.

The surroundings are as, if not more important an aspect of every good family cycling holiday. Well, it’s safe to say that this tour certainly won’t disappoint in that department, as you peddle your way across the Rhine delta nature conservation, along the lake’s beautiful banks, and through the awesome orchards at Lindau.

Day 1: Arrival in Constance

Individual arrival in the city of Constance offers you a chance to explore some of its many delights. Well worth a visit are the flower island Mainau or the convent on Reichenau island. Collect your bicycles before an overnight stay, ready to start the first stage tomorrow.

Day 2: Constance – Friedrichshafen: 23km

Today starts with a short ferry ride to Meersburg, where medieval town gates and the 7th century Meersburg castle await you. We also highly recommend an excursion to the spectacular stilt houses at Unteruhdingen. As you jump on your bike and continue with the stage, you’ll pass through the quaint fishing village of Hagnau, before reaching Friedrichshafen, home of zeppelin aviation.

Day 3: Friedrichshafen – KressBronn/Lindau: 14-24km

There’s two possible routes you can take at the start of today’s stage. Either; peddling along the Lake Constance bike trail, passing through Langenargen before crossing the oldest suspension bridge in Germany to Nonnenhorn and on to Wasserburg. Or; a slightly longer trip via Tettnang, famous for its vast fields of hops and exquisite baroque castle, and on to lakes Gegersee and Schleinsee. An evening of exploration or relaxation await you during your stay in the Bavarian metropolis of Lindau or the peaceful commune of Kressbronn.

Day 4: Kressbronn/Lindau – Bregenz/Höchst/Buriet: 10-30km

The old town at Lindau, situated on an island is the perfect place for a morning coffee before setting off on today’s cycle. Crossing the border to Austria you first reach Bregenz, where a trip by cable car on the Pfänder Mountain comes highly recommended (weather permitting). The next part of the stage leads you to your overnight stay in Bregenz, Höchst or Buriet, located on either side of the Rheindelta nature reserves.

Day 5: Bregenz/Höchst/Buriet – Rorschach/Horn/Arbon/Egnach: 17-39km

Today’s stage starts with a ride through the breath taking Rhine delta nature conservation, before reaching the wonderful old seaport of Rorschach. You can either take a train from here to St Gallen or continue your cycle on to Steinach (approx. 30km), and take the train from there. St Gallen is one of the most culturally rich places you will visit on this tour. Our pick of the sites is the St Gallen Abbey, a UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE and one of the most important baroque monuments in switzerland. You’ll end today’s stage with an overnight stay in Rorschach, Horn, Arbon or Egnach.

Day 6: Rorschach/Horn/Arbon/Egnach – Constance: 27-40km

Your final stage takes you across the canton Thurgau, an area filled with traditional half-timber houses, typical to Romanshorn, in some of the regions quaintest of villages. Taking your final peddle back in Constance, here we bid you farewell. Individual departure.
