Cycling around the western part of Lake Constance, you’ll be blown away by the rich history the route has to offer, as well as the breath taking examples of natural beauty the that make up the surroundings.

A stunning example of Swiss culture and history greets you in Stein am Rhein. The medieval part of the town, which is pedestrianised, is the perfect place to take coffee and view some of the beautiful frescoes painted on the buildings. Also worth mentioning are the stilt houses at Bodman-Ludwigshafen, a fascinating look into the past and part of the Prehistoric Pile dwellings around the Alps UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Obviously, surroundings are a big part of what makes a family cycling holiday a good one. This predominantly lakeside route won’t disappoint on that front, with breath taking panoramic views a regular feature. Day 1: Arrival in Constance

Individual arrival in the city of Constance offers you a chance to explore some of its many delights. Well worth a visit are the flower island Mainau or the convent on Reichenau island. There are also many wonderful restaurants and bustling tavernas where you can sample some local delicacies. Collect your bicycles before an overnight stay, ready to start the first stage tomorrow.

Day 2: Constance – Mammern/Stein am Rhein: 23/29km

Today’s stage starts with a gentle morning ride through some of the areas quaint and picturesque fishing villages. You’ll arrive in Ermatingen where a visit to the Vinorama museum comes highly recommended. Following the bike path you’ll finally arrive in Mammern or Stein am Rhein. As well as the incredibly well preserved medieval part of town in Stein am Rhein, a tour of the Lindwurm museum offers an insight into the bourgeois lifestyle of the 19th century.

Day 3: Mammern/Stein am Rhein – Radolfzell/Bodman-Ludwigshafen: 24/45km

Today starts with a cycle to the peninsula Höri that lies at the lower lake. When you reach the old village centre of Gaienhofen, there is the Hermann-Hesse-Höri house and the Höri museum, which are both well worth a visit. Cycling on to Radolfzell and Möggingen at the Mindel lake, there’s the perfect place to take a little rest at the romantically situated water castle. The stage ends in Bodman, a well-known and well-visited health resort.

Day 4: Radolfzell/Bodman-Ludwigshafen – Uhldingen/Meersburg: 19/39km

A nice way to start today is with a visit to the prehistoric stilt houses in Bodman-Ludwigshafen, a true step back in time. Peddling on along the banks you’ll pass through Sipplingen and Überlingen, where a visit to the cathedral St. Nikolaus comes highly recommended. Passing the incredible baroque abbey at Birnau you’ll cycle along the Prälatenpath to Monkey Mountain, home to approx. 200 Barbary macaques. An alternate route takes you along the banks via Seefelden to Uhldingen/Meersburg.

Day 5: Uhldingen/Meersburg – Constance: 5/10km

Today is a great opportunity to explore Meersburg. Thought of by many as the most beautiful lakeside cities, take all the time you need before taking a ferry across the lake to Constance where your tour comes to an end. Individual departure.
