For four days, the historic old town harbour in Konstanz provides the perfect backdrop for one of the oldest and most important water sports events in Western Europe.

Having been revamped in 2009, and in the wake of more than 100-years of tradition, International Lake Constance Week has established itself as ‘the’ sport and social meeting point for water sports enthusiasts and vintage car owners. Every year at the start of the water sports season more than 1,000 participants, and almost 80,000 visitors from across the globe, descend on the harbour promenade for a long weekend of social chatter and sporting competition. The colourful and bustling harbour hosts sailing regattas, rowing competitions, water skiing cups, harbour concerts and shows. More than 160 traditional yachts, modern high-tech racing boats, sleek motor boats and historic steamboats as well as gleaming vintage cars give the harbour in Konstanz an energetic Mediterranean maritime feel.

Oktoberfest, Munich

Oktoberfest, Munich

Oktoberfest, Munich, Germany

When: 16th September- 3rd October 2017

The combination of the words ‘October’ and ‘Germany’ have become synonymous with the now worldwide famous Oktoberfest! The festival of beer and ale has become iconic across the globe, with many people migrating great distances to sample the beer (all brewed within the city limits of Munich), Bratwurst and bands which make Oktoberfest in Germany such an iconic and addictive event.

Around 6 million visitors ascend on the festival in Munich each year, with only around 20% coming from outside of Germany, and a staggering 6-7 million litres of beer being served in traditional 1 litre Steins! At 12 noon on the first day of the festival, the mayor of Munich will tap the first barrel and declare ‘Wiesen’- the festival is officially open!

At around the £7/€10.00 mark for a 1 litre stein or ‘Maß’ of beer, it is on par with the majority of bars in central London, but the predictably efficient waiting staff and intoxicating enthusiasm of everyone there ensures the festival spirals rapidly into a hive of Bavarian fun. Besides the numerous ales and beers on tap throughout the city of huge brewery tents, there is an abundance of traditional food including the hearty regional flavours such as Würstl (sausages), brezn (pretzel), sauerkraut (pickled cabbage), and much more!

There are also designated family days for those with children who can’t bear to miss out. These occur on the two Tuesdays within the fortnight and reduced prices on the admissions, fairground rides and performances are offered from 12am to 6pm.

Pedal Ventures recommends:

Accommodation in Munich over these dates is unsurprisingly sought after and so booking in good time is essential.

The city is awash with characters of all ages from a plethora of cultures and all with a shared passion for the arts.
